The Drau cycle path is one of the most spectacular bicycle routes in Europe and has been classified from ADFC as 5-star-quality-route. The tour starts on the source of the river Drava in Dobbiaco/Toblach. This is the place where Gustav Mahler, the composer, found most of his inspiration. The river Drau accom-panies you on the way to the Lake Klopeiner See.

Pasing the east Austrian capital of Lienz you cycle through Spittal a.d. Drau and Rosegg. On the way you will encounter several lakes where you can have a refreshing bath. Or you just enjoy the sun on the banks of the Millstätter*, Ossiacher*, Faaker or Wörthersee* Lakes.This tour is ideal for beginners and families.
The route mainly takes you alongside the river Drau and there are no steep inclines. The bicycle path is well marked. (*can be reached doingsome loops).

The Tscheppaschlucht gorge is a unique nature experience near Ferlach. Past thunderous waterfalls a well secured path over wooden footbridges and bridges through the gorge.

Day 1: Hochpustertal (Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco)

Individual arrival at the hotel in Hochpustertal. Free, unguarded public car park near the hotel.

Day 2: Hochpustertal – Lienz/surroundings

(approx. 50 - 55 km)

Starting in Villabassa/Dobbiaco you cycle along the bike path to San Candido and then on to Sillian. Afterwards it is downhill all the way to the Austrian town of Lienz, where already the „Illyrer“ founded one colony, which was developed by the Romans to the city „Aguntum“.

Day 3: Lienz/surroundings – Dellach/Berg im Drautal

(approx. 30 - 35 km)

Visit the outdoor museum “Aguntum” - excavations and discoveries report about that Roman settlement. You leave from where the Isel flows into the Drau and carry on with the bike path to Oberdrauburg (“Perchten and Alm” museum and old mill) and then to Berg. This was once an important Roman Trade Route.

Day 4: Dellach/Berg im Drautal – Sachsenburg/Spittal a.d. Drau

(approx. 30 - 45 km)

From Dellach/Berg you pass through idyllic landscape and dreamy villages en route to Sachsenburg/Spittal a. d. Drau. You have the possibility of taking a detour to lake Millstättersee for a quick swim or a short rest. Spittal a.d. Drau is famous for its comedies at Castle Porcia, one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Austria to visit.

Day 5: Sachsenburg/ Spittal a.d. Drau – Rosegg/Mühlbach

(approx. 60 - 70 km)

This day takes you to Rosegg/Mühlbach via Villach, the second largest town in Carinthia. Villach is not only well known for its carnival adventures, but also for its fair. There are also many interesting places to visit. Through its position at the border triangle Carinthia-Slovenia-Italy you will experience the mediterranean flair. The nice and well preserved medieval city centre invites to stroll and linger. Along the bike path you cycle to Rosegg/Mühlbach.

Day 6: Rosegg

(approx. 55 - 60 km)

Today the bike tour leads you through the charming Rosental. During your journey along the Drau cycle path you get the possibility for the one or another cultural or sportive side trip. At lake Feistritz you can do canoeing or you visit the gunsmiths and Carnica museum of apiculture in Ferlach. Gain an insight view on bee hives, beekeeping tools and much more. The exhibition also documents the apiculture traditions of the Rosental valley. The Tscheppa gorge is 1.2 km long. The 26 m high Tschauko waterfall and the gateway through the rock are well worth seeing.

Day 7: Mühlbach – Lake Klopeiner See; Lake Klopeiner See

You are spoilt for choice: either a relaxing day on the banks of lake Klopeiner See or you start for an individual bicycle tour in Southern Carinthia.

Day 8: Lake Klopeinersee

Individual departure from Lake Klopeinersee or extension of your stay.

By car: on the motorway Brenner/Brennero (A22) to Brixen/Bressanone – take the exit „Brixen/Pustertal“, then along the valley Pustertal/Valle Pusteria (SS49) to Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco, depending on the location of your hotel. Drive along the Felbertauernstraße to Lienz in Eastern Tyrol (Austria) and then further into Italy through the valley Pustertal/Valle Pusteria to Toblach/Dobbiaco or Niederdorf/Villabassa, depending on the location of your hotel.
By train: Take the train from Innsbruck over the Brenner/Brennero to Franzensfeste/Fortezza. Change trains for the valley Pustertal/Valle Pusteria - Lienz and get off either at Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco depending on the location of your hotel. By plane: Low cost flights are available to Innsbruck airport, “Sant’ Angelo - Antonio Canova” airport in Treviso and/or to the Marco Polo airport in Venice. On request, we can organise transfers from the airport to the starting point of the cycle tour.
